Helena Montana was the richest gold town in the west. Gold mines by the hundreds covered the mountains and gulches. There were more saloons and brothels per population than anywhere else in the whole west. Gold brought con-men and women by the dozens. Outlaws robbed miners and stage coaches. When the railroad came thru town in eighteen-eighty-three, things got even worse. Early one morning a beautiful young lady stepped down from one of those trains with a set mind. She would have one of those dozens of millionaires as a husband in no time.

Zack Wood was a twelve-year old boy that loved school and went every day without missing a day. An older boy by the name of Boras Hunsucker was the school bully, being fourteen years old. He didn’t discriminate, he bullied friends, girls and boys and laughed when he hurt them. One rainy evening Zack had to ride into town to get his mother a bag of flour and a tin of baking powder. As Zack put the things in his saddlebags, up rode Boras and two more boys. “What cha doin’ in town, you little chicken?” Zack just undid the reins from the hitch rail and started to climb in the saddle. Boras dove out of his saddle knocking Zack to the ground. Zack got up, muddy as all get out. “Leave me ah lone, Boras!” “I’ve got ah rope an’ I’m just gonna drag you in this mud. From now on ‘stead ah callin’ you Chicken, I’ll call you mud boy.” He laughed. He started pulling that rope from his saddle, tying one end to the saddle horn. He dropped the loop end and started coiling it up. Before the loop was off the ground, Zack lunged with hands in the air scaring that horse. It turned, trotting down the street. The loop got caught around Boras’ ankle, dragging him in that mud.
