After the deaths of their parents in Nantucket, Massachusetts, the three young Armstrong brothers—Enoch, 21, Moses, 18, and Elijah, 15—decide to go West to seek their fortunes. They journey first to St. Louis, Missouri, where they soon sign up for a three-year beaver-trapping expedition deep into the deadly heart of the untamed West. The brothers will contend with the unforgiving natural terrain, with hostile Indians, and with dangerous animals, including the most-feared creatures of the era, grizzly bears. But their parents have instilled in them a deep sense of fairness, an unerring moral compass, and a profound love of family that will serve them well in the Heart of the West.

The brothers, who each married an Indian woman, manage to live in peace among both the Crow and Lakota tribes, despite these two peoples being age-old enemies. The two tribes do sometimes band together to fight their common enemy, the aggressive, warring Blackfoot tribe.
Then, Enoch kills the brother of Blackfoot warrior Dog Killer during a Blackfoot raid, and the crazed, sadistic warrior—whose name comes from calling his enemies dogs as he cruelly dispatches them—swears vengeance, vowing to track Enoch to the ends of the earth. Dog Killer means to kill not only Enoch but his brothers, his family, anyone he holds dear.
But family means everything to Enoch, and he just might have to ratchet up his own level of crazy to defend those he loves...
