The two tribes do sometimes band together to fight their common enemy, the aggressive, warring Blackfoot tribe.
Then, Enoch kills the brother of Blackfoot warrior Dog Killer during a Blackfoot raid, and the crazed, sadistic warrior—whose name comes from calling his enemies dogs as he cruelly dispatches them—swears vengeance, vowing to track Enoch to the ends of the earth. Dog Killer means to kill not only Enoch but his brothers, his family, anyone he holds dear.

But the Armstrongs and their families have a much more immediate worry: a freakishly large and cunning grizzly bear, Old Ephraim, has acquired a taste for human flesh and is a dire threat to the very survival of the Armstrong brothers and their families.
